Influenced by Walter Battiss's ' If birds can carry feathers , why can"t feathers carry birds ?', I have played with feathers for years , just for the fun of it.

The feathers represent the fragility of a delicate new friendship. One gust of wind and it could be swept apart.

The wetness of the street also suggests vulnerability and unsure footing.

circles of life
Looking at the whole picture one sees a large stick figure -Pink head, black arms & legs, a spine ( symbolising the central axis/pivot around which Life revolves) This axis represents security, balance & connection.

The lower circle within a pod/cradle rep. the womb - Tranquil, nurturing, generous in size, deep & rich in colour.
It is very clearly connected to the axis.

The green surrounding the lower "womb" rep. "Home" -
( Green, green grass...) Again a feeling of security & comfort.
The upper 3 circles I shall call " Full Circle" ( clockwise)

HEAD (delicate pink circle rep. a cocoon)
One sees a stick figure, rep. a foetus/infant/naive child, blissfully content & secure in its delicate pink bubble.

APPLE ( rep. temptation)
Note its disconnection from the axis !
A time of awakening. The figure sees Life out there, beckoning, luring.

The yellow rep. "Fields of Gold; of plenty.
It is irresistable. The figure challenges its boundaries, pushing against them with all its might.

EXPLOSION !
Again a disconnection from the axis.
The figure breaks out , kicking through the barrier.

All new journeys / seasons come with risks & consequences.
Sometimes good , Sometimes bad
(rep. by a "SPLAT" of colour}

And many times it goes "Full Circle"

Back to the delicate pink circle (cocoon) , but now the figure rep. Hurt, Rejection, Fear, Vulnerability and has to, as in Life, begin the journey all over again ...

Throughout this Life journey the circles are nevertheless connected by a common thread ( black lines ) , binding them to the axis, and to one another ...

All this within one life.

somewhere out there

My daughter has just written matric and my thoughts go to all those who are leaving the "cradle" to go and find Life " somewhere out there".

The blue pods rep. the cradle, the juicy red apples, ripeness and temptation.

Outside the safety of the cradle lies peril and pain
( the sharp fiery yellow/orange daggers )

Most apples go forward to mature successfully, with no major turmoil ( right side of canvas rep. richness of life -
Texture, Colour, No impaled apples )

Others fall straight out of the cradle and onto one of Life's daggers ( left side shows impaled apples, each with a tear, rep. fear/injury/hurt/heartache.

Note the lack of rich colour and texture , suggestive of bleakness/hopelessness/despair.
