Sue Pienaar
Sue Pienaar, born and raised in the Natal Midlands, picked up her paintbrushes and started creatively painting again in 2000 after many years away from the easel. It was during her schooling in Pietermaritzburg that she discovered her love and talent for drawing and painting through her extraordinary and inspirational art teacher Mrs. Nancy Nielson Baker.
In latter years, Sue's sister, Jeanette Bastard, herself a well-known artist and art teacher in the Cedarville district, became her valuable mentor. However, studying and going into the nursing profession, marriage and raising a family on a farm near the town of Indwe in the Eastern Cape took up most of her time allowing little freedom to put brush to canvas.
The vibrant rural Transkei scenes surrounding Sue during her 19 years in Indwe continually inspired the young nursing sister. After moving to Port Alfred in 2002 she began using Acrylic and Charcoal as her medium of choice. Her bold use of colour and texture is evident in her popular “Wash Day” series where a sense of fun lightens up the canvas. True to her nature, Sue is always on the lookout for new subject matter. “It's endless. Everything is a potential painting.”
Her work appears in homes across South Africa, Mozambique, The United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Germany, Poland and beyond.
Sue's use of roll-up soft canvas has proven to be popular as gifts for folk abroad. She also accepts commissions from clients, some of which have been fun and unusual to paint viz. a club rugby jersey, a South African flag, an old farm truck or its number plate, a farm signboard, a family pet and more……….
Her “Wash Day with SuePienaar" line of merchandise includes full Bib Aprons, Tray Cloths, Post Cards, Perpetual Calendars and Canvas Prints.
Her latest 2015 “RedHot” series has now been launched and includes Paintings and Prints, Perpetual Calendars, Post Cards and full Bib Aprons with a selection of further merchandise to follow.
She and her partner Doug live in the tiny coastal settlement of Riet River near Port Alfred along with their two equally contented cats Pumpkin and Queen.
